The Battle
"You can't fight a battle you don't think exists" is a statement from the book Wild at Heart by John Eldredge. So what is the battle that each of us faces? That's the question too many of us refuse to ask ourselves, and consequently we end up accepting defeat in areas where we should have victory. Or we allow others to fight in our place. Too many men are passive (lacking in energy or will, i.e., lethargic) when it comes to spiritual leadership in the home. I Peter 5:8-9 tells us, "Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of suffering." If we don’t think there is a battle going on, then we are already prisoners!
There are three things every man must commit to prayer daily. First, we must recognize who God created us to be. Exodus 15:3 states, "The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is His name!" If we are created in His image, then we are warriors. A warrior is someone engaged in some struggle or conflict, which leads us to the second point: We need to identify what we are battling by putting a name on it. Take a hard look in the mirror and assess each situation. There may be several battles going on such as lust, hate, a lack of communication with our wives, etc. Third, once we have our target, we must take action and resist that passive nature. Men typically don't want to act unless we know it will go well, and we don't want to move unless we're guaranteed success. What the scriptures call the "FLESH," the old man, or the sinful nature, is that part of the fallen Adam in every man that always wants the easiest way out. (Wild at Heart by John Eldridge).
